You might be surprised but it is actually a great time to lay sod! Fall time still offers that brilliant sun but at cooler temperatures which is perfect for sod! It also has lots of rainy days to keep the sod damp and allows the sod to start developing a strong root system.
It takes sod roughly 2 weeks to create a shallow root system and 4-6 weeks for the deep root system to be established. So with the proper planning of the sod and when to lay it down it can have a better show in the springtime than actually laying it in the springtime.
It's always a great idea to double-check before you lay sod that there are no grubs below. which is why when a customer asks me to lay sod I will do a few digs in different areas of the lawn to double-check if grubs are present! Then obviously if they are purchase nematodes and sprinkle in fall and spring as they will attack grubs. If you do not know what Grubs do they simply feed off the grass root system and cause dead patches of grass that will come up like an old carpet.
Overall yes it is a great idea to lay sod in the fall time, just make sure you are looking at the weather outlook for the next several weeks to confirm frost is not on its way within the time frame that sod needs to take root!
